The Magic Circle – John William Waterhouse
£24.00
John William Waterhouse, 1886. Tate Britain, London.
A sorceress traces a protective circle in the earth with her wand, a snake coiled at her throat and a crescent sickle in her hand, as smoke rises from her cauldron. Outside the circle, ravens, a toad and a skull wait in the barren landscape. Bought for the nation the year it was painted, it is one of Waterhouse's most atmospheric and enchanting works.
