Isle of the Dead (Die Toteninsel) – Arnold Böcklin
£24.00
Arnold Böcklin, 1880 (first version). Kunstmuseum Basel.
A silent oarsman rows a white-shrouded figure and a coffin across still black water towards a rocky island, where towering cypresses rise above tombs cut into the cliffs. Böcklin called it a picture for dreaming; he painted five versions, and its brooding stillness captivated everyone from Freud to Rachmaninoff, who composed a symphonic poem inspired by it.
