Witches' Flight (Vuelo de brujas) – Francisco de Goya
Francisco de Goya, 1798. Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid.
Three witches in the pointed hats of the Inquisition's condemned soar through the night, carrying a naked, screaming man into the darkness, while below a peasant hides beneath a white sheet and a donkey looks on. Painted for the Duke and Duchess of Osuna, it is Goya's brilliant satire on superstition and fear, and one of the most haunting night scenes in Spanish art.
