Joseph Ducreux, c.1790.

Recoiling in shock, eyes wide and hand thrown up in alarm, Joseph Ducreux captures the split second of sudden terror. It belongs to his remarkable series of self-portraits exploring extreme expressions, painted by the man who had been First Painter to Marie Antoinette and who survived the French Revolution. Theatrical, witty and strikingly modern, it looks like a reaction meme painted two centuries early.
