Dulle Griet (Mad Meg) – Pieter Bruegel the Elder
Pieter Bruegel the Elder, c.1562. Museum Mayer van den Bergh, Antwerp.
Armoured, sword in hand and laden with plunder, Mad Meg strides towards the gaping mouth of Hell while an army of women battles demons and loots a house behind her. A burning sky, monstrous hybrids and endless strange details make this one of Bruegel's wildest and most mesmerising works, inspired by the Flemish proverb of a woman who could raid Hell and return unscathed.
