Portrait of Madeleine – Marie-Guillemine Benoist
£24.00
Marie-Guillemine Benoist, 1800. Musée du Louvre, Paris.
Madeleine meets your gaze, calm and composed, in a white headwrap and dress against a plain background. Painted in the brief years between France abolishing slavery in 1794 and Napoleon restoring it in 1802, the portrait carried only a description for two centuries, until research pointed to her name and the Louvre added "Portrait of Madeleine" as its title.
