The Fighting Temeraire – J.M.W. Turner
£24.00
J.M.W. Turner, 1839. National Gallery, London.
A ghostly warship that fought at Trafalgar is towed up the Thames to be broken up, dragged by a small black steam tug as the sun sets on the age of sail. A pale moon rises opposite. Turner called it his "darling" and never sold it; in 2005 it was voted Britain's greatest painting.
