The Birth of Venus – Sandro Botticelli
£24.00
Sandro Botticelli, c. 1484–1486. Uffizi Gallery, Florence.
Venus arrives on a scallop shell, blown ashore by the wind god Zephyr. Her long neck and impossible pose would topple her off the shell in real life, but Botticelli wanted ideal beauty, not anatomy. Legend says her face was modelled on Simonetta Vespucci.
